contr\u00e1rio do que preconizou durante muito tempo a historiografia nacionalista, nenhuma na\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 dada por natureza ou determinada pela composi\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9tnica do seu povo. As na\u00e7\u00f5es s\u00e3o comunidades imaginadas, e toda nacionalidade \u00e9 fundada em premissas que incluem uns e excluem outros a partir de crit\u00e9rios discut\u00edveis. Essa verdade se evidencia nas representa\u00e7\u00f5es do Brasil geradas por artistas e escritores germ\u00e2nicos no s\u00e9culo XIX. No confronto com lugares e modos de vida em tudo diferentes dos seus, viajantes oriundos de culturas e pa\u00edses, diversos entre si e que viviam conflitos seculares, passaram a perceber o quanto tinham em comum. Para os imigrantes que vinham para ficar, permanecer no Brasil pressupunha forjar novas identidades, mesmo que fosse apenas para se agarrar \u00e0 nostalgia do que haviam deixado para tr\u00e1s. <br \/><br \/>Foi na circula\u00e7\u00e3o internacional de livros, estampas, panoramas e \u00e1lbuns de vistas que se firmou a contraposi\u00e7\u00e3o entre uma Europa civilizada e o suposto exotismo do resto do mundo.
